Uh Huh

RobotSound's next video installment comes to us with Avenue D's "Do I Look Like A Slut?" A hearkening back to the Electroclash fervor, Debbie D. and Daphne D., proteges of Larry T, bring the skank in this Booty-Bass-tastic ode to lookin' like a ho. I'm not sure how long this will stay up on YouTube, but hopefully it won't get flagged by the Morality Police, allowing scads of burgeoning nymphos to become empowered by its unblinking sentiments.

Unfortunately, I never got to see these girls perform in the flesh; the one time I attempted to at an Oakland warehouse party, the promoter shut things down at 3AM, when they were supposed to come on (and never bothered paying them to come out, the douchebag). As that had been my reason for going to the party in the first place (not to see Kid 606 or Gold Chains who played earlier in the evening), my only consolation was a hug from Daphne D. They called it quits a few years back, but you can still pick up CDs and DVDs through their website.

I Can See It In Your Eyes

Another YouTube upload for you. This time I added a few images to accompany the music which should hopefully make for slightly more interesting viewing. Who knows - maybe I'll start actually making videos to go along with tracks soon. But for now, enjoy this 10-year old vintage Minimal Synth track from a RobotSound favorite, Bakterielle Infektion, a side-project of Roger Semsroth aka Skanfrom, Sleeparchive, Television Set, etc.

Random Robot Selecta #5

Sorry for the long delay. I'll try not to let it happen again.

Time to bring back our Random Robot Selecta which I'll attempt to make a regular feature moving forward. From the ever-prolific Uwe Schmidt (aka Atom Heart, Lassigue Bendthaus, Señor Coconut, etc.), this nearly 20-year old track is the only release he made under the Slot moniker. The first release on early 90s Frankfurt label, Cyclotron (also home to several Hypnotist releases), we get a nice bit of bleep techno very much in line with what GTO (as Tricky Disco) were doing at the time. Enjoy, and DANCE!

Q

This past Friday, I had the pleasure of meeting a true synthpop star, Stacey Q. She made an appearance at The Chase's 2 Yr. Anniversary at Chop Suey in Little Tokyo here in LA. Luckily my friend told me that she usually does a meet and greet, so I made a point of bringing along a couple of her records which she graciously personalized. At 51 years old, she's going strong with a new CD, Color Me Cinnamon, and she's still got the energy to rock a crowd. While I didn't get to hear any beloved SSQ tracks, and her set was ridiculously abbreviated (2 songs...really?), getting to say hi and hearing her sing her big hit made my night.

Here's a few rarities from her distant past before you seek out her new material.

SSQ - Fire
Somewhat cheesy Jimi Hendrix cover. Move over Rover, and let Stacey take over!

SSQ - Playback
From the Enigma Variations comp, which is strangely not on the SSQ album of the same name.

The Truth Is Out There

Celebrating the release of a new great album (“Where Is The Truth”) and the Seefeel reunion, Pontone digs through Mark Van Hoen’s back catalogue and found many musical treasures.

Mark Van Hoen has always defined and stayed true to his own sound, and as a result, has amassed a timeless discography that manages to remain unique due to the fact that he creates his own exquisite production techniques, never copying what's currently out there or replaying what has already been done. His music isn't easily categorizable, a marker of true artistry in my book.

For the past 10+ years, followers of Van Hoen have learned to be a patient group - there's been 2 6-year gaps between albums (as Mark Van Hoen), owing to his other production projects as well as numerous life/career interruptions (getting dropped from his label, getting his house demolished, starting a family, and most recently, moving to the states). His own patience, along with his ability to cast the right collaborators to work with has allowed him to grow as an artist while continuing to shape his own sonic legacy. Fans will be very eager to hear his latest opus (out now on City Centre Offices), knowing that what Mark has crafted, has been honed over the last few years, until he felt he arrived at something close to the truth.
