You might know him from his work as Arpanet (on both Rephlex and Record Makers). Or perhaps as 1/2 or 1/4 of the equally mysterious data physicians, Dopplereffekt, Der Zyklus, Elecktroids, or Japanese Telecom. If you've really done your homework, you may be familiar with his even more obscure output as Flexitone, Dr. Finn & Dr. Otto Henke or Intellitronic. In any event, the man/machine behind all of this might be, at least according to Discogs.com, Gerald Donald aka Heinrich Mueller. He has been associated with the Patron Saint of Detroit Electro, Drexciya aka James Stinson, Shifted Phases, Transllusion, The Other People Place, Lab Rat XL, and LAM (Life After Mutation) as well as electro dystopians, Ultradyne. But no one knows who he REALLY is. There have been few public performances or press releases and possibly only one interview ever from the man; What little information that can been gleaned, from xeroxed record inserts to the grainy footage of Dopplereffekt's Scientist video, does not help solve this enduring enigma.

So what DO we know about the entity behind some of today's most forward-thinking, robo-philic music?

1. He is at the forefront of science. His Wireless Internet album under the Arpanet alias (named for the large wide-area network created by the United States Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) established in 1969 which served as a testbed for new networking technologies) was released in 2002, just as wireless technology was starting to catch on. In 2004 came the Biometry album under the Der Zyklus moniker. In today's paranoid, hyper-security-conscious society, biometric authentication (the scanning of fingerprints, retinas, facial patterns, and hand measurements) is being used in places like Disney World to help keep the unwanted out of the Happiest Place on Earth. Arpanet's most recent album, 2005's Quantum Transposition, deals with yet more advanced scientific and mathematical principles. Clearly this is a man who is tracking where science is taking us.

2. He heads Dataphysix Engineering International, a (formerly?) Detroit-based inphophysix laboratory where he has evolved treatises (okay, maybe he's simply composed songs) on Superior Race, Plastiphilia, Sterilization, Character Maps and Nipponese Robots, along with his co-Dopplereffekt-ubermenschen, Kim Karli (aka Helena Eichmann aka To Nhan Le Thi), Rudolph Klorzeiger (aka Rudolf Fisher) and William Scott. Most recent output has been solo, but then again, maybe there has always been more than one person involved.

3. He has chosen the name Heinrich Mueller, Hitler's Chief of the Gestapo, a man whose fate is still unknown to this day. Why would someone adopt the name of someone whose purpose was to hunt down Jews? Curious to say the least.
